Massive National Day of Action for the Ocean Concludes with Significant Results and a Huge Positive Impact

Wednesday, 14 Aug, 2024

With bright and sunny weather across the country, Sea Shepherd Australia volunteers and supporters from all corners of Australia came together on Sunday 11 August for a day of clean-ups, community outreach, and family fun dedicated to the conservation, defence and protection of our ocean.

Sea Shepherd chapters hosted 13 events across 7 states and territories nationwide involving over 300 local participants!

Driven by a passion for protecting marine life and geared up with gloves and trash bags, participants hit the sand running and successfully removed 540kg, over half a tonne of trash, from shores around the nation. This effort provided immediate relief to local coastal habitats and the ocean.

The top offenders were cigarette butts, plastic remnants, and single-use plastic food packaging - confirming the ongoing need to urgently eradicate single-use plastic and move towards reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives.

Events also featured Sea Shepherd stalls with activities such as face painting and vegan bake sales, along with plentiful merchandise sales to help fund our campaigns. This allowed for bountiful engaging conversations with the public about our work along with fun activities for all ages.

With the sun shining down and the sound of children’s laughter as hallmarks of the day, the atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive! The enthusiastic support and love for Sea Shepherd Australia's work highlighted the incredible impact we can have when we all unite under a shared passion for the ocean.

The enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers was truly inspiring, and the results were a powerful reminder of the positive change we can create when we come together to act as one.

A massive thank you from the bottom of the ocean to everyone who was a part of this wonderful day! Together we are conserving, protecting and defending the world’s ocean!
