Farley Mowat Update

1730 Hours AST 

The Farley Mowat is working its way out of the ice floes. The last of the broken down and, hopefully, financially broke sealing vessels are heading out in another pathetic little parade behind the Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker Amundsen.

Six of the eleven Farley Mowat crewmembers have returned to the ship. The other five will be going home from Charlottetown.

The Farley Mowat crew are sorry to see them depart and wish to express their gratitude for their volunteer service and for their courage on the ice when attacked by the sealers. Dr.Jerry Vlasak and Colin Biroc are returning to Los Angeles, Meagan "Turtle" Southern, and Ian Fritz are returning to Tucson, Arizona, and Ryan Goyette is returning to his home in Rhode Island.

Unfortunately, news coverage of the seal kill has fallen off because of the death of the Pope.

But for the most part, the hunt in the Gulf is over. The seal pups are entering the water and are becoming scattered and hard to find. We don't have the final kill figures yet but we are confident that the killing has been far below the allotted quota of 90,000 for the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Farley Mowat is now heading towards the Magdalen Islands to investigate if any sealing activity is taking place by the people we call the Maganderthals.
