Thank you to everyone who joined us in sieving the sand and searching for pre-production plastic pellets—commonly known as nurdles—during this year's Aussie Nurdle Hunt.
Amazing efforts of our volunteers and community members, almost 8,000 nurdles were removed from various locations across the country. These tiny pellets, which are the raw material for plastic products, are one of the major threats to the ocean and marine life. It is estimated that 445,970 tonnes of nurdles are spilled into the environment every year, polluting our ocean and harming marine life before they even become plastic products.
To prevent these spills and keep nurdles from entering the marine environment, we must cut plastic production and enforce stricter controls on their transport. We need a strong Plastics Treaty to protect our oceans and ensure a cleaner, safer future for marine life and everyone!
In addition to nurdles, our crews and community members also removed 19,229 pieces of debris, making local habitats cleaner and the ocean safer. It’s 308kg of trash prevented from entering the ocean!
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in this year’s Aussie Nurdle Hunts and clean-up events throughout March.
Join us this April and help us Stem the Tide of plastic pollution together. Find upcoming events here.
