The time for change has never been more important when it comes to the survival of our oceans.

Plastic pollution and the impact it is having on marine life and the health and future of our oceans is being mentioned, monitored and debated on a daily basis around the world. 

Globally, governments are proposing bans and new legislation, whilst here in Australia on Sunday, we will implement a new ban on lightweight single-use plastic bags in every state, except New South Wales.with Queensland, Western Australia starting in July, and Victoria to follow next year. 

These bans cannot come quickly enough. 

The tide against plastic pollution is slowly turning but the fight is not over. 

50 percent of the global production of plastic is used to make single-use items that we use only for a few minutes. Every minute, a million plastic bottles are sold and 480 billion were purchased globally in 2016.If put end to end, these bottles would reach halfway to the sun.

Every year, 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds die a cruel and senseless death at the hands of plastic.

Just because our oceans are drowning in plastic it doesn’t mean plastic production is going to stop, in fact, it is set to rise to 40 percent over the next decade.

Plastic Free July, which starts on Sunday, is the time to rethink how you use plastic in your daily life. You can start small, with the top four offenders, and get a reusable replacement to take with you every day.

Replace water bottles, coffee cups, plastic bags, straws and cutlery and be plastic free every day! 

Every day, and at virtually every Sea Shepherd Marine Debris beach clean-up, we are seeing our beaches overrun with plastic packaging with the top offender being single-use items. 

Sir David Attenborough said: “What humans do over the next 50 years will determine the fate of all life on the planet."

It’s time to stop our insane addiction to single-use plastic and tackle this problem head-on.
