The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans has struck again, this time with extraordinarily devastating results even for them,

This week, between 1.5 million and 2.25 million baby pink salmon were killed in the Fraser River because the Department of Fisheries and Oceans authorized a short-term gravel mining operation immediately adjacent to the most productive salmon spawning habitat in Canada's most significant salmon spawning river.

The sheer incompetence and mismanagement of the DFO is astounding. Yet it continues year after year as they display an appalling disregard for the species they are charged with protecting.

What was DFO thinking when they allowed a temporary gravel road slicing out across the bed of the Fraser, serving as a causeway for trucks moving gravel out of a mining operation on an island in the middle of the river? The causeway shut off the flow of the river and left high and dry a spawning area several hectares in size. The exposed gravel surface was pockmarked with about 6,500 nest depressions that served now as the grave markers for millions of salmon who were in the most delicate stage of their tenuous life cycle.

The stench of millions of rotting young fish bodies is overwhelming and led investigators to the scene of this latest corporate crime.

Two years ago, the federal Fisheries Department lifted a moratorium banning gravel mining on the Fraser, over the objections of conservation groups who were concerned that industrial operations in the bed of the world's most significant salmon river would be harmful to fish.

According to the DFO, the department is currently conducting a review of the situation.

First they mismanaged the cod fishery and caused it to crash, they mismanage every other fishery they are charged with protecting, they allow gross quota violations of the seal slaughter, and now they allow millions of salmon to be killed in order to allow the exploitation of gravel from a salmon nursery.

This summer some bozo from DFO will be lamenting the killing of a few thousand salmon by First Nations people as a threat to the fishery while conveniently ignoring the fact that there is only one reason that fish are disappearing from Canadian waters. It is not the seals, it is not the First Nations people, and it is not the seabirds. The culprit is the Doofus department and the clowns they have in Ottawa posing as fishery experts. These bums should be thrown out and told to get a job more in line with their expertise - like gambling and influence peddling, er, I mean lobbying.

Canadian Minister of Fisheries Loyola Hearn should resign and every single incompetent fisheries bureaucrat should be fired and replaced by people who know what they are doing.

If not it will be more tragedies, more losses and more devastation. When will Canadians ever learn to fix what needs fixing and save those species that are being so grossly abused by the fools in Ottawa?
