Thursday, 07 Dec, 2023
Chloe Watego is a Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi-based woman with a passion for sharing and celebrating her culture through art. Chloe recently created a custom piece for Sea Shepherd Australia inspired by her connection to the ocean.
As a self-taught artist, Chloe uses painting for creative expression and to aid in healing as she continues to explore her family's heritage.
Born and raised on Yugambeh land, Chloe, of South Sea Islander and Aboriginal descent, holds ancestral ties to Torres Strait Island, the Bundjalung nation, and the Yiman people from the Upper Dawson River area, Taroom.
Chloe is a contemporary artist with a passion for telling and sharing stories. Inspired by nature, in particular, Sea Country, Chloe uses time spent interacting with these environments to inspire her artworks.
For Chloe, art is more than a medium; it's a means of bridging the disconnect between her family and their ancestral lands. It's a profound journey back to self and roots. Informed by personal experiences and a deeply ingrained cultural background, Chloe's commitment is evident in her transformation of stories into art, creating a space where heritage and contemporary expression harmoniously converge.
