These special coins are used in geocaching, a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure.  A geocache is a waterproof container containing a log book, pencil or pen, and trade items including coins, travel bugs, etc.  Geocachers (people participating in the game) can place a coin anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology, and then share the geocache's existence and location online.  Each coin is a kind of signature item or calling card and is assigned a unique tracking ID.  This allows the items to travel from geocache to geocache or to be passed amongst friends, picking up stories along the way.

Inspired by a passionate supporter of Sea Shepherd, Steve O’Neil, this coin commemorates our Founder and President Captain Paul Watson and his crew of brave and dedicated volunteers.  It also serves as a reminder of our ongoing efforts in the Antarctic Ocean to prevent the Japanese whaling fleet from illegally poaching whales in the southern ocean whale sanctuary south of Australia.
