Honouring Graham Wells
Friday, 14 Mar, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend, mentor, and colleague, Graham Wells. A pillar of Sea Shepherd Australia and a force for the ocean, Graham’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication, kindness, and an unbreakable commitment to defending marine life.
While he has set sail on his final voyage, his impact remains woven into the fabric of our mission and our hearts.
Graham dedicated over a decade of his life to Sea Shepherd, serving as a steadfast leader, mentor, and friend. He was instrumental in preparing and leading three Sea Shepherd vessels to the Southern Ocean to confront the Japanese whaling fleet. His leadership and determination played a vital role in some of our most defining victories—from shutting down illegal whaling to stopping the Western Australian shark cull and protecting the Great Australian Bight from Big Oil. Graham’s efforts saved countless marine animals and strengthened the resolve of everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.
To those who knew him, Graham was more than a leader—he was a gentle and compassionate soul who lifted those around him. Whether it was standing at the helm of a campaign or offering quiet support in the toughest moments, Graham had a way of making people feel seen, supported, and inspired. He had our backs in the toughest of times and kept us moving forward when challenges threatened to slow us down.
His daughter Susanne and son Gabe continue his legacy, embodying the same passion and determination for ocean conservation. As we navigate this difficult time, we find solace in knowing that his spirit endures through those he mentored, the campaigns he helped lead, and the volunteers he inspired.
To further honour his memory, we are proud to announce the Graham Wells Excellence Award — a tribute to his unwavering commitment to our movement. This award will recognize chapters that go above and beyond in their efforts to protect the ocean, just as Graham did. Celebrating the dedication, heart, and impact of our volunteers—the very values Graham stood for.
As we continue our fight to defend, conserve, and protect the ocean, we do so with Graham in our hearts. The new conservation work in the Great Australian Bight and the upcoming partnership for Australian Sea Lions, set to launch in 2025, will carry forward his vision and passion. His love for the sea and the marine life he fought so hard to protect will forever be an inspiration.
Fair winds and following seas, Graham. Your legacy lives on in every wave, every victory, and every volunteer who continues the fight.
We will miss you, but we will carry you with us always.
