With the support of the Galapagos School Board, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Galapagos extended the educational and informative aspects of the Shark Awareness Pack to all schools on Santa Cruz Island. Within a two week period, Sea Shepherd’s team presented 30 workshops divided amongst nine local schools. We scheduled the workshops to coincide with World Environment Day (June 5), and World Ocean Day (June 8), to emphasize the importance of this project.

During the workshops, Sea Shepherd showed a number of videos about sharks, as well as shark finning videos. Sea Shepherd’s team, lead by Malena Garcia, also elaborated on the importance of sharks to the Galapagos Marine Reserve as well as the global eco-system and the urgent need to put an end to shark finning.

Nearly 1,000 students, ages eight to 14, and 30 teachers were presented with a complimentary copy of our recently published book Sharks of Galapagos. This book was created and published thanks to a generous donation by LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics. For the time being, the book is only available in Spanish. However, thanks to one of the many great Sea Shepherd international volunteers, plans are well underway for an English version of the book. Sea Shepherd hopes to have the English version available within a few months.

This project has been an overwhelming success, as demonstrated by the participation of enthusiastic students and teachers, not only in terms of shark preservation but also for conservation and awareness in general. Sea Shepherd Galapagos will continue to work with students and schools to protect marine wildlife from illegal fishing activity. An important tactic to create awareness amongst the local community. The increased awareness will help us and local authorities to better implement regulations and international treaties and put a halt to specie extinction.

La oficina de Galápagos culmina proyecto de educación ambiental para escuelas locales

Photo: Jeff LittonCon el apoyo de las autoridades locales de educación, el proyecto Shark Awareness de Sea Shepherd Galápagos llegó con información sobre tiburones, a todas las escuelas en la Isla Santa Cruz. Durante 2 semanas el equipo de Sea Shepherd realizó 30 talleres en 9 escuelas de la localidad. Los talleres coincidieron con el día mundial del medio ambiente (5 de junio) y el día mundial del océano (8 de junio), para destacar la importancia de este proyecto.

Durante los talleres se presentaron una serie de videos sobre tiburones y sobre la problemática del aleteo de tiburones. Nuestro equipo, liderado por Malena García, también se refirió a la importancia de los tiburones para la Reserva Marina de Galápagos y el ecosistema global; así como a la urgente necesidad de poner fin al aleteo.

1096 estudiantes de 8 a 14 años de edad y 30 maestros recibieron, de forma gratuita, ejemplares de nuestro libro Tiburones de Galápagos que fue recientemente publicado gracias a una generosa donación de LUSH. Por ahora el libro está disponible únicamente en español. Sin embargo, su traducción al inglés está en preparación gracias a una de las extraordinarias voluntarias que Sea Shepherd tiene a nivel mundial. Esperamos que la versión en inglés esté disponible en pocos meses.

El proyecto ha tenido un éxito abrumador, como quedó demostrado con la entusiasta participación e interés de estudiantes y maestros, no sólo en cuanto a tiburones, sino también sobre temas generales relativos a la conservación. Sea Shepherd Galápagos seguirá trabajando con los estudiantes y las escuelas para proteger la fauna marina de la pesca ilegal. Una táctica importante para crear conciencia en la comunidad. Una táctica que nos ayudará y que ayudará a las autoridades locales para mejorar la aplicación de leyes y tratados internacionales; y, a poner fin a la extinción de estas especies.
