Horror weekend: Two whale entanglements in two days

Tuesday, 03 Oct, 2023

It's been a horror weekend in Queensland with two young whales entangled in shark nets off the Sunshine Coast in just two days.

The first entanglement occurred off Alexandra Heads, with locals reporting they could hear heartbreaking sounds of distress echoing around the headland early in the morning. The whale calf was heavily entangled in shark nets, with mum never leaving her distressed calf's side. The calf was eventually freed, however after hours of exhaustion, their survival is not guaranteed.

Unfortunately, the horror wasn't over, with another young whale reported early Tuesday morning, this time entangled in a shark net off the popular Noosa main beach. The entanglement was reported at 5am, with the whale eventually freed by contractors around 7:30am. There is a high likelihood that the young whale became tangled overnight, and was only reported once the sun rose in the morning.

This is completely unacceptable and with a myriad of alternatives available, shark nets should NOT be in the water endangering marine lives.
