Why should I care about Australian sea lions?
Australian sea lions are Australia’s only endemic species of seal (pinniped). They are also Australia’s only Endangered marine mammal still in decline. Australian sea lions are a vital part of the marine ecosystem, helping to maintain biodiversity. Without action, this incredible species could disappear forever. Protecting them ensures a healthier ocean for all marine life.
What is the goal of this campaign?
The Sea Lion Defence Campaign aims to reverse the population decline of Australian sea lions by supporting research, monitoring, and habitat restoration efforts in the Great Australian Bight.
How is Sea Shepherd making a difference?
Sea Shepherd is working with the South Australian Government to provide a research vessel and resources to access remote sea lion colonies. This partnership enables critical monitoring and recovery efforts.
How can I support this campaign?
You can support the campaign by:
Donating: Your contribution funds vital research, habitat restoration, and monitoring efforts.
Volunteering: Opportunities to volunteer may become available as the campaign evolves—stay tuned for updates.
Advocating: Help raise awareness and support World Heritage listing for the Great Australian Bight.
What are the biggest threats to sea lions?
Australian sea lions face threats such as fishing bycatch, prey depletion, habitat destruction, plastic pollution, and climate change. These threats are driving their population decline, making conservation efforts critical.
What impact has Sea Shepherd had on similar campaigns?
Sea Shepherd has a strong history of successful partnerships with governments worldwide to protect marine species and habitats. For example:
In Mexico, we work with the government to protect the critically endangered vaquita, the world’s rarest porpoise, by deploying ships and crew to safeguard their habitat.
In Africa, we collaborate with various governments, providing ships, crew, and fuel, while authorities onboard investigate and arrest illegal fishing vessels.
In the Great Australian Bight, Sea Shepherd’s Operation Jeedara helped protect this globally significant marine environment from oil drilling, showcasing the power of collective action in defending our oceans. These efforts demonstrate that the challenges our oceans and marine life face are immense, but working together can lead to impactful results. Now, we are proud to partner with the South Australian Government and the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia to defend, conserve, and protect the endangered Australian sea lion.
