Home to animals seen nowhere else on Earth, the Bight remains threatened by oil and gas companies looking to exploit the area’s natural beauty and ecological significance.
Operation Jeedara is our ongoing mission to defend, conserve and protect the Great Australian Bight from risky deep-sea drilling.
In 2016 and 2018, Operation Jeedara saw our flagship, the M/Y Steve Irwin, travel to the Great Australian Bight to showcase the beauty of the region and raise the profile of the issue to a global audience.
Following the incredible upswell of opposition and the success of Operation Jeedara, in February 2020, Equinor became the fourth fossil fuel company to abandon their plans to conduct risky deep-sea oil drilling in our pristine Great Australian Bight.
In 2021, oil and gas giant Santos also abandoned its plans. Together, we won a massive victory for the Bight by keeping the oil and gas giants out - but the fight is not over. The next step is to ensure that no new oil or gas projects can ever threaten this precious marine ecosystem by securing World Heratige Status for the Great Australian Bight.
